Le fleuve Yangtsé est le plus grand fleuve de Chine, et son bassin compte pour 70 % de la pêche continentale du pays. Pour autant, depuis 2002 la pêche est régulièrement interdite sur l’ensemble du fleuve chaque année pour des périodes plus ou moins longues afin de permettre la reconstitution des stocks de poissons, notamment pendant la période de reproduction. Beaucoup d’espèces sont au bord de l’extinction et pourrait connaître le sort du dauphin de Chine (Lipotes vexillifer), un cétacé d’eau douce endémique du Yangtsé. Ce dernier a été déclaré éteint en 2007. Le marsouin du Yangtsé, un autre cétacé d’eau douce est lui en sursis. La pêche et l’aquaculture jouent un rôle de plus en plus important dans l’alimentation des hommes. Ainsi, à l’échelle de la planète, la consommation de poissons est passée de 10 kg par an et par personne dans les années 1960 à 19 kg par an et par personne en 2012, selon l’Organisation des Nations-unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO). Cela représente 17 % des apports protéiniques mondiaux. On estime que 60 millions de personnes travail dans le domaine de la pêche et de l’aquaculture dont 84 % en Asie. Les tonnages pêchés, de l’ordre de 80 millions de tonnes par an, sont stables mais de nombreuses pêcheries sont surexploitées. Seule l’aquaculture progresse. La Chine représente à elle seule 60 % de la production de ce dernier secteur.
