Cherry trees, Bessenay area, Monts du Lyonnais, Rhône, France (45°46’N, 4°33’E).

The Rhône departement is France’s third-biggest cherry producer, with an annual yield of 8,000 tons. On the hills around Bessenay, west of Lyon, 998 acres (400 ha) of cherry trees rise in terraces at altitudes of 983 to 2,295 feet (300 to 700 m). Rooted in light, magnesium-rich soil, which these fruit trees love, they contribute about 3,000 tons to the Rhône departement’s total output. This relatively young orchard (almost half the trees are less than ten years old) has seen high rates of planting over recent years. The fruit ripens from the end of May until July and gives the village of Bessenay its nickname of “Cherry Capital.”
